Import duty increased to 15 per cent within 24 hours !

After being rebuked by the US Supreme Court, Donald Trump’s arbitrary decision

Washington DC (United States) – The Supreme Court of the United States had ruled that President Donald Trump does not have the authority under American law to impose import duties. Following this, Trump had fixed a 10 per cent import duty on all countries; however, even before 24 hours had passed, he announced an increase to 15 per cent. In fact, after the court’s ruling, Trump had no moral authority to take any decision regarding import duties; yet yesterday he imposed a 10 per cent tax and has now raised it to 15 per cent. Considering the court’s decision, the duty should instead be restored to the earlier rate of three-and-a-half per cent.

Import duty to come into effect from 24 February

By signing an executive order, Trump has imposed a 15 per cent duty on countries worldwide. This duty will come into effect from 24 February and will remain in force for the next 150 days as per the order.

Editorial Perspective

Even as the direct contempt of the US Supreme Court is being committed, no one is questioning Trump – this is indeed astonishing for Indians ! If such an autocratic system continues, it would be surprising if America does not go bankrupt during Trump’s tenure !
