Two roads in Mumbai named after the tyrant Tipu Sultan

Congress alleges BJP had approved them

Mumbai – Two roads in Govandi and Andheri (West) are named after the tyrant Tipu Sultan. BJP corporators had approved the naming of these roads. Congress General Secretary and spokesperson Sachin Sawant revealed this information based on official documents. Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal has been facing criticism at all levels for comparing Tipu Sultan with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Responding to this criticism, Sachin Sawant attempted to show that the BJP was also at fault by revealing that it had supported naming roads after Tipu Sultan.

1. In 2001, a proposal was approved in the Standing Committee meeting to name the road from Bhavan’s College in Andheri (West), via Gilbert Hill, to C.D. Barfiwala Road as “Sher-e-Mysore Tipu Sultan Road.” Four BJP corporators were present at the time.

2. When the proposal came before the General Body, then BJP corporator Vitthal Kharatmol suggested it. Other BJP corporators were also present in the house.

3. In Shivajinagar area of Govandi, Road No. 4 has been named “Shaheed Tipu Sultan Marg.” A nameplate bearing this name has also been installed.

4. In 2013, a resolution to name the road was approved in the Ward Committee meeting. The current Mayor and then corporator Ritu Tawde was present at the meeting. When the proposal came before the General Body, the current Mumbai BJP President and then corporator Amit Satam approved it. At that time as well, 21 BJP corporators were present in the house, according to Sachin Sawant.

5. “This is BJP’s double standard. Earlier, BJP had affection for Tipu Sultan; but now, to implement its polarisation agenda, Tipu Sultan has suddenly become bad,” Sachin Sawant said in response.

Regarding this, Amit Satam said, “These proposals are old. The demand to name a road in Juhu after Tipu Sultan was made by then Congress corporator Mohsin Haider. It was not our demand.”

Editorial Perspectives

  • Tipu Sultan, who beheaded Hindus, carried out forced conversions, and destroyed temples, cannot be considered an ideal figure for India. Those who glorify him and his religious fanaticism are themselves culpable.
  • Nationalist citizens expect BJP to take an appropriate stand on this issue.
