  • Incident  after the accidental death of Dy CM Ajit Pawar

Mumbai – The Minority Welfare Department granted minority status to 75 educational institutions in four days, from a few hours after the accidental death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The issue of certificates granting minority status has been stayed since August 2025, but despite the stay, the certificates were issued through the Mantralaya. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken a serious note of the same, as the related information has come to light, and has ordered a stay on such certificates.

1. The first certificate was issued at 3.39 p.m. on 28.01.2026, i.e. on the day of the accidental death of Ajit Pawar. On this day, seven institutions were issued such certificates. Then, within the following four days, 75 certificates were issued.

2. Many schools were issued such certificates at 6.45 p.m. and 6.58 p.m., i.e. after the close of office hours.

3. Out of 75 schools, 25 schools are run by Poddar International School. Five schools operated by Saint Xavier’s Institution have also been given minority status.

Benefits for the schools to get minority status

1. The Right to Education Act doesn’t apply to minority schools

2. It is not mandatory for such schools to give 25% of admissions to poor students

3. There are no restrictions on teachers to give examinations for educational qualifications

4. The Law of Right to Information also doesn’t apply to such schools

5. Teachers get special concessions in promotions

6. Schools are free to accept donations and grants of any amount

An inquiry should be conducted into such shocking matters – State Minority Commission

The State Minority Commission’s Chairman, Pyare Khan, stated that the matter of issuing minority status certificates to 75 schools is most shocking. An inquiry should be conducted into all guilty officers, and cases should be filed against them under  MCOCA.

Editorial Perspective

How is there no control on Minority Welfare Department? It needs to be investigated who, based on whose instructions, the department undertook this process, and there should be transparency in such investigations. The rules and criteria should also be verified for issuing a stay in the matter.
