Washington (USA) – In the backdrop of ongoing violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, leaders of global Hindu organisations have issued an appeal. The letter expresses concern that under the interim Government led by Muhammad Yunus, Hindus in Bangladesh are facing increasing violence and persecution. It also demands that the systematic genocide of Hindus in Bangladesh be stopped.

The letter, coordinated by the ‘Hindus Advancing Human Rights Initiative,’ has received support from more than 125 organisations and individuals across 15 countries. It calls upon the United Nations, the USA, the European Union, India and other international organisations to take immediate steps against atrocities committed against Hindus.
The letter warns that continued neglect of this issue could result in the complete genocide of local religious minorities.
1. International concern has grown regarding the condition of Hindu minorities under the interim administration led by Yunus.
2. Following the political transition in Bangladesh in August 2024, incidents of violence, threats and forced displacement targeting Hindus have increased.
3. In the backdrop of upcoming elections in Bangladesh, questions have arisen regarding the safety of minorities and the credibility of the democratic process.

4. The letter notes that in 1951, Hindus constituted approximately 22 per cent of Bangladesh’s population, which has now declined to less than 7 per cent.
5. According to human rights experts, this decline is evidence of ongoing ethnic and religious genocide.
6. The coalition has called for concrete measures to address atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, including independent fact-finding missions, mandatory public reporting and accountability mechanisms.
Editorial PerspectiveFor the past 55 years, minority Hindus in Bangladesh have faced continuous attacks. While even minor incidents involving minorities in India often lead to nationwide unrest, global organisations merely issue appeals for the protection of Hindus in Bangladesh. If someone asks, ‘Why will the genocide of Hindus not continue?’, what is surprising about that? |
