Washington (USA) — US President Donald Trump has issued a warning to the British Prime Minister over Britain’s decision to hand over sovereignty of the Diego Garcia island in the Indian Ocean to Mauritius. He has also threatened to deploy troops if the agreement with the United States is broken.

Trump said that he had “very good discussions” with Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding Diego Garcia. He stated that the island hosts a major US military base, is located at the centre of the Indian Ocean, and is crucial to America’s national security. “We have the most powerful military in the world. Our military operations over the past year have succeeded because of our strength, the advanced capabilities of our equipment, and most importantly, the strategic location of our military bases,” Trump said.

He added that he was aware many consider the agreement negotiated by Prime Minister Starmer to be one of his best deals. However, Trump warned that if the lease agreement is terminated in the future, or if anyone threatens or endangers US military operations or forces stationed at the base, he would reserve the right to secure and strengthen the American presence on Diego Garcia through military means.

What Is the Issue?

The Chagos Islands are a group of more than 60 small islands located in the middle of the Indian Ocean. This strategically important region lies along key maritime routes connecting India, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Diego Garcia is the largest and most significant island in the group.

In 1965, prior to Mauritius gaining independence, Britain separated the Chagos Islands from Mauritius and declared them the “British Indian Ocean Territory.” During the 1960s and 1970s, Britain forcibly displaced approximately 2,000 local residents to enable the United States to establish a military base on the islands.

Mauritius has been asserting its claim over the islands for several decades. In 2019, the International Court of Justice declared Britain’s control over the Chagos Islands illegal and recommended that the islands be returned to Mauritius.
