  • Former Devaswom Board member K P Shankar Das reprimanded by the Supreme Court

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – The Supreme Court has dismissed the petition filed by former Devaswom Board member K P Shankar Das in connection with the gold theft case at the renowned Sabarimala Ayyappa temple in Kerala. While rejecting the plea, the Court strongly rebuked him, observing, “You did not even spare God !”. Das had approached the Supreme Court seeking expunction of certain observations made against him by the Kerala High Court; however, the Division Bench comprising Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma rejected this demand as well.

Suspicion had been raised that gold from temple ornaments went missing when these items were sent for electroplating and repairs. After the matter reached the Kerala High Court, the investigation was handed over to a Special Investigation Team (SIT). According to the SIT’s findings, there is a strong possibility that the gold from these items was stolen and sold. The main accused in the case, Unnikrishnan Potti, has been charged with stealing temple gold for personal gain.

At least God and the temple should not have been touched

While dismissing the petition, the Supreme Court reprimanded the petitioner, stating that at the very least, God and the temple should not have been touched. The Court also noted that Devaswom Board member Shankar Das was equally responsible in the Sabarimala temple gold theft case.

The Court further clarified that although the High Court had granted certain concessions considering Das’s age and health, given the seriousness of the offence, he has not received any relief from the trial. Shankar Das and K Vijayakumar cannot escape liability arising from the criminal conspiracy allegedly hatched to steal and tamper with the gold plates.

Additional time granted to the investigation team

The Devaswom Bench of the Kerala High Court has granted the SIT additional time to complete the investigation into the Sabarimala gold theft case. After reviewing the interim progress report, the Court extended the deadline by six weeks. The SIT will now submit its interim investigation report on 19 January.

Photograph of the main accused with Sonia Gandhi surfaces

A political controversy has erupted after a photograph of the main accused Unnikrishnan Potti and Govardhan with Congress leader Sonia Gandhi came to light. The BJP has raised questions over the issue. Former Kerala BJP president K Surendran has demanded that the Congress place the truth behind this photograph before the public. He has also expressed the possibility that the Sabarimala temple gold theft case is not a simple one and may have links to international smuggling.

Editorial Perspectives

  • How many more damaging consequences of the government takeover of temples must come to light before Hindus awaken ? For 100 crore Hindus, this is extremely shameful !
  • Since Communists are hardcore haters of Hindus, their rule is no different from Mughal rule ! Eliminating them from the political landscape through elections is the only solution to this problem !
