Sikh lawyer in Canada refuses to take oath of loyalty to the king

The court also agreed that it was wrong to ask for such an oath

Ottawa – In a historic ruling, the Supreme Court of the Canadian province of Alberta has upheld religious freedom over constitutional traditions. The Alberta Court of Appeal has ruled that requiring new lawyers to swear an oath of loyalty to King Charles is a violation of their rights. The ruling is considered to be a major victory for Edmonton-based Sikh lawyer Prabhjot Singh Wirring.

He had been prohibited from becoming a member of bar association when he had refused on religious grounds to swear an oath of loyalty to the King. In a unanimous decision on December 16, the court agreed that such a mandatory oath violates the right to religious freedom enshrined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
