In Kerala, a CPM councillor apologises after saying ‘Jai Hind’ following her oath-taking

  • Apology sought out of fear of opposition from the CPM

  • BJP criticises the incident

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – The results of the recently held local self-government elections in Kerala have been declared. Following this, during an oath-taking ceremony, a CPM councillor apologised after saying “Jai Hind” upon taking the oath. The BJP has expressed strong displeasure over this apology, with the Kerala BJP state president describing the situation as one of “an atmosphere of fear.” According to him, even expressing patriotism invites punishment and public humiliation.

What exactly is the controversy ?

Akhila G.S., elected from the Kurakkanai ward in Thiruvananthapuram, said “Jai Hind” while expressing joy after taking the oath. Soon after uttering the slogan, she appeared uneasy and offered an apology. Subsequently, workers of the CPM-led Left Democratic Front tried to reassure her, stating that “any citizen who loves the country has the right to raise this slogan.”

Reacting to the incident, Kerala BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated that the episode exposes the fear manufactured by the Left. He said that even voicing patriotism in Kerala now invites threats and humiliation. He further remarked that while the CPM and its INDI Alliance partner, the Congress, deliver lectures on tolerance, they routinely brand the BJP as “intolerant.”

Editorial Perspective

This incident clearly shows that CPM-ruled Kerala seems to belong not to India, but to China ! The very CPM leaders who label Hindus as ‘Taliban-like’ are themselves revealing how authoritarian and urban-Naxalite in their thinking they truly are !
