NCERT’s new textbook includes detailed information on the violence committed by Ghaznavi !

Includes accounts of temple loot, forced conversions of Hindus, and more

New Delhi – NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) has extensively presented the topic of Mahmud Ghaznavi’s invasions of India in the Class 7 Social Science textbook ‘Exploring Society: India and Beyond.’ Earlier, the book contained only a single paragraph on Ghaznavi. The new edition now includes 6 full pages of information. The book provides a detailed account of Ghaznavi and the historical periods associated with him.

Ghaznavi demolished temples !

‘Exploring Society: India and Beyond’ states that Ghaznavi attacked Hindu temples, plundered them, promoted Islam, and killed non-Muslims. In the previous edition, the same subject was limited to a single paragraph that read: ‘Kings built grand temples to display their power and wealth; however, many foreign rulers attacked and targeted these affluent temples. Mahmud Ghaznavi was the most prominent among them.’

Details of the destruction of the Somnath Temple included !

The new textbook provides comprehensive information on Ghaznavi’s 17 invasions of India under the section ‘Ghaznavi’s invasions.’ This includes details of the loot of Mathura’s temples, the destruction of the Kannauj temple, and the demolition of the Somnath temple in Gujarat. It also mentions that the present Somnath temple was rebuilt in 1950 and inaugurated by the then President Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

Details on Hunnic and Arab invaders as well – NCERT

NCERT Director Dinesh Saklani stated that the book also includes a chapter on empires and kingdoms of the pre-Ghaznavi era, from the 6th to the 10th century CE. This covers rulers of Kannauj, Kashmir, the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Pallavas, and Cholas and concludes with information on invasions by Huns and Arabs from Central Asia.

Editorial Perspective

It must be said that NCERT is now genuinely attempting to teach children true history ! This is a welcome change. Nevertheless, there is still scope for further improvement !

“The aim is to portray the Mughals as violent!” – Prof. Apoorvanand Jha, Delhi University

Prof. Apoorvanand Jha of Delhi University remarked, “It is evident from NCERT’s actions that it intends to present history in a way that portrays the Mughals as violent. These revisions are being made with that very purpose. They do not wish to highlight the significant contributions the Mughals made to India; therefore, the information about them is being reduced.”

Editorial Perspective

When facts deliberately hidden for decades are finally revealed, Mughal apologists are bound to feel the sting !
