Various programmes organised across the country to mark 150 years of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ !

Opposition from a Muslim organisation in Jammu & Kashmir

New Delhi – The national song ‘Vande Mataram’, which stirs patriotic fervour in the hearts of Indians, completes 150 years this year. In this context, the government has directed schools in several states to organise various programmes to commemorate the occasion. However, a Muslim organisation in Jammu & Kashmir has strongly opposed this directive.

In Jammu & Kashmir, the organisation ‘Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema’ (MMU) has vehemently opposed the celebrations. The state administration, through an official order, instructed all schools to hold special programmes on 7 November to mark 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’. However, MMU has objected to this order.

MMU leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq stated that singing or reciting ‘Vande Mataram’ is “un-Islamic” according to Islamic teachings, and that such directives hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims.
The organisation has written to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, demanding the withdrawal of this order. It has warned that if the order is not revoked, all religious leaders in the state will unite to decide the future course of action.

MMU has accused the administration of trying to impose “Hindu-inspired ideology” in Muslim-majority areas. (‘Vande Mataram’ is a song associated with the nation, not any religion. The mentality of those Muslims who give it a religious colour becomes evident through such opposition ! – Editor)

On 1 October, in a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Government decided to celebrate 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’ across the nation. The BJP has named this initiative the ‘Rashtriya Ekta Utsav’ (National Unity Festival).

Editorial Perspectives

  • Would it be wrong if patriotic citizens feel that those who oppose ‘Vande Mataram’—the national song that awakened a new spirit of freedom among revolutionaries, inspired citizens to preserve national unity, and gave freedom fighters the courage to make the British flee – should be declared traitors and imprisoned ?
  • When the Union Government spends the largest share of taxpayers’ money collected from Hindus on Jammu & Kashmir, what does the nation’s Hindu majority receive in return ? Hindus should now oppose the excessive spending on such States !
  • Isn’t this very mentality responsible for the fact that jihadi terrorism in Jammu & Kashmir has not yet been eradicated ?
