Nine-yard sari walking competition in Borivali (Mumbai) to honour traditional attire

  • Event part of ‘MP Sports Festival 2025’

  • Focus on promoting Indian culture, indigenous and traditional clothing

Mumbai – A nine-yard sari walking competition will be held in Borivali in November as part of the ‘MP Sports Festival 2025’, organised by BJP MP Piyush Goyal from North Mumbai. The aim of the event is to honour Indian culture, indigenous traditions, and traditional attire, he stated. “Since the sari is a traditional garment, the nine-yard sari walking competition will help revive and highlight an ancient practice,” he added.

The competition will cover a distance of 2–3 km. Currently, office-going women rarely wear saris as managing daily work and commuting in a sari is challenging, making it less common. Walking in a simple sari has become a skill in itself for the younger generation. The walkathon is being organised under the theme ‘Walk daily, stay healthy’ to encourage a habit of collective walking.

Registration for participation is open on the portal until 2 November. Alongside the sari walk, traditional Indian games such as Vitidandu, Langdi, Lagori, Mallakhamb, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, as well as cricket, athletics, and volleyball, will be organised under the slogan ‘Khelega India, To Badhega India’ (If India plays, India progresses).

Editorial Perspective

Traditional attire carries more sattvik energy than modern clothing; its intactness and proper draping draw divine consciousness, benefiting the wearer and enhancing positivity around them. This has been confirmed by research conducted using various scientific instruments by Maharshi Adhyatma Vishwavidyalaya.
