Incident from Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir: In South Kashmir’s Anantnag, a video of a minor Muslim student enthusiastically hugging her Hindu teacher, Vipin Sharma, during a school event went viral on social media. Following this, radical extremists issued rape and death threats to the girl. Unable to bear the harassment, the girl reportedly attempted suicide. She and her family have demanded strict action against those responsible.
1. The Muslim schoolgirl, in a moment of joy, hugged her Hindu teacher, Vipin Sharma. This simple act led to a barrage of online threats from radical elements. Frightened, the girl appeared in a video to apologise publicly, yet the intimidation continued. The girl and her mother questioned, “What does Islam truly say about issuing such threats?” Distressed by the continued harassment, she attempted to take her own life.
2. The individuals issuing threats claimed to act in the name of religious faith. However, under every moral and legal code, threatening or abusing a minor is a grave offence. Acts of intimidation and violence violate the principles of respect and protection that form the foundation of any religion.
3. The Anantnag Child Welfare Committee has taken a strict stance in this matter. The Committee has ordered the immediate removal of the controversial video and has warned of firm action against those circulating objectionable content.
Editorial PerspectiveA spontaneous act by a minor Muslim girl is being viewed through the lens of religious extremism. The same extremists who condemn her have often remained silent on crimes against minor Hindu girls. Such double standards contradict the principles of any true faith. |
