Pollution levels spike in Delhi on the very first day of Diwali !

Despite Supreme Court ban, firecrackers burst all night !

New Delhi – Despite the Supreme Court permitting the bursting of only eco-friendly firecrackers in Delhi-NCR (National Capital Region) between 8 pm and 10 pm, citizens continued bursting crackers late into the night on 20th October. Consequently, air pollution levels rose at 36 out of 38 monitoring stations.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the capital crossed 344 by 10 pm. An index up to 50 is considered normal. Owing to this rise, anti-pollution restrictions were enforced. This was the second time this season — the first being on 14th October — that such restrictions were imposed. Under these curbs, the use of coal and wood has been banned, and diesel-powered generators have been restricted.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Those who harm the environment and risk their own lives for the fleeting thrill of bursting firecrackers are traitors to the nation ! Such people should be charged with sedition !
  • Instead of holding only firecrackers responsible for pollution, strict action and restrictions should also be imposed on other contributing factors !
