UN takes note of attacks on Hindus and Christians in Bangladesh

Geneva (Switzerland) – The 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has highlighted the atrocities committed against Hindus, Christians and other minorities in Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi army opened indiscriminate fire on tribals protesting against the injustice in the case of gang rape of a young woman in Guimara, informed Suhas Chakma, Director of the ‘Rights and Risk Analysis Group’. Three people were killed, and many others were injured in the massacre. The incident took place on September 23rd.

Alarming figures related to violence in Bangladesh

Chakma said that in the past year, Bangladesh has witnessed 637 murders, 878 attacks on journalists, 2,485 violent incidents against religious minorities, and more than 5,00,000 cases of violence against political opponents. All these incidents have targeted Hindus, Christians, and other minorities. The interim Government of Muhammad Yunus has dismissed all members of the National Human Rights Commission amid an increase in cases of mob lynching, rapes, political repression, and attacks on political leaders.

No new members appointed to the Human Rights Commission

Suhas Chakma said that no new members have been appointed to the National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh. This is a serious example of negligence. Bangladesh should immediately appoint members to the Human Rights Commission to stop the increasing human rights violations.

Hindus are being deliberately targeted in Bangladesh

Norwegian leader slams Bangladesh at the United Nations

Norwegian leader Erik Selle

At a special event held during the session, European parliamentarians and human rights activists expressed concern about the atrocities against women and children in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Norwegian leader Erik Selle said in his speech that he had spent a large part of his life in Bangladesh and loved the country; but the events of the past year had disturbed him. There is currently an interim Government in Bangladesh, but Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus must still keep them in check to protect the country from extremists. The rights of Hindu and Christian communities are being seriously attacked. Hindus in particular are being deliberately targeted. This situation is reminiscent of the days before Bangladesh became independent, when the Pakistani army used to forcefully attack Hindus. Someone needs to raise their voice on this.

Editorial Perspective

Hindus and Christians won’t be protected simply by taking note or by criticizing the atrocities. The United Nations must take strict action; but the reality is that the United Nations has become a mere puppet. Hence no one benefits from it.
