New Delhi – ‘Whenever the nation was struck by calamities, RSS volunteers were at the forefront. During Partition, when lakhs of Hindu families were displaced and rendered homeless, the volunteers stepped forward to help them. This was not just relief work, but an act of strengthening the soul of the nation. During the 1956 Anjar earthquake too, volunteers were engaged in relief efforts’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said while praising the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

He was speaking at the centenary celebrations of the Sangh. RSS Sarkaryavah (General Secretary) Dattatreya Hosabale was also present on the occasion. Prime Minister Modi released a commemorative coin and postal stamp dedicated to the RSS. On one side of the coin is India’s national emblem, while the other side depicts Bharat Mata seated on a lion, along with the image of RSS volunteers.

‘For the first time in independent India’s history, the image of Bharat Mata has been featured on Indian currency. The coin also bears the Sangh’s motto. The postal stamp reflects the RSS volunteers, who are constantly engaged in national service and in strengthening society. For this, I congratulate the nation’, Prime Minister Modi said. From this year’s Dussehra, the Sangh begins its centenary year programmes. Modi himself was once an RSS pracharak (full-time volunteer), and before joining the BJP, he had established himself as an able organiser within the Sangh.

Key points highlighted by PM Modi

After independence, conspiracies were hatched against the Sangh

1. The goal has always remained the same — ‘One India, a Great India’. In this journey of national service, the Sangh has not been free from attacks. After independence too, conspiracies were hatched to prevent the Sangh from entering the mainstream.

2. Even Param Pujya Golwalkar Guruji (second RSS chief) was imprisoned. After being released, he remarked, ‘Sometimes the tongue gets crushed under the teeth, but we do not break our teeth — because both the teeth and the tongue are our own’. Guruji wrote that enduring suffering oneself to lessen the suffering of others is the sign of a selfless heart.

The Sangh continued building the nation

1. Just as villages flourish along the riverbanks through which a river flows, so too has the Sangh nurtured society. Like a river with many streams nourishing diverse regions, every stream of the Sangh has worked in multiple fields of society. Even if these streams have diverged, contradictions have never arisen between them — because the purpose and spirit of each is the same : Nation First.

2. Param Pujya (Dr) Hedgewarji (RSS founder) would say, ‘Take what you have and shape yourself as needed’. He would prepare ordinary people to stand ready for the nation.

3. It is said about the Sangh that ordinary people come together to accomplish extraordinary deeds.

4. The Sangh is a ground where the journey of a volunteer moves from ego toward self-awareness. In the shakha (daily gathering), an individual’s social and mental development takes place, and the spirit of nation-building constantly blossoms within them.

5. It is good fortune of our generation of volunteers that we are witnessing such a grand occasion of the centenary year. Today, I extend greetings to the lakhs of volunteers dedicated to national service. I also pay my respects to Param Pujya (Dr) Hedgewarji.
