Demand submitted to the President by the Warkari Council

Pune, Maharashtra – Alleging that Chief Justice Bhushan Gavai’s remarks about Lord Vishnu have hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus, the National Warkari Council–Vedic Hindu Warkari Multipurpose Service Association, Maharashtra State has submitted a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu.
The memorandum states that no individual holding a constitutional position has the right to make derogatory comments about any community, religion, or deity. However, the statement made by Bhushan Gavai regarding Lord Vishnu has deeply offended Hindus, particularly the Warkari community. The Council further expressed a strong suspicion that such anti-Hindu bias may have influenced his judicial decisions. Therefore, it has demanded a thorough review of all his past judgments, appropriate judicial action against him, and his removal from office.
The memorandum adds that the Warkari tradition teaches that Panduranga Vitthal of Pandharpur is none other than Lord Vishnu himself, making Gavai’s remarks especially condemnable. Consequently, the Council has called for an immediate public apology from Chief Justice Gavai.

What is the Case about ?
The controversy stems from a Supreme Court hearing concerning the Khajuraho Shri Vaman Temple in Madhya Pradesh. Petitioners had sought the reinstatement of a 7-foot-tall idol of Lord Vishnu that was destroyed during the Mughal era.
The Supreme Court dismissed the petition, observing that devotees who wish to worship may do so at other temples. The bench, comprising Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran, reportedly told petitioner Rakesh Dalal: “Go and ask the deity to do something. If you call yourself a true devotee of Lord Vishnu, then pray and meditate upon Him.”
