Washington (US) – “We expect improvements in the tough measures taken against India. Only President Trump can decide on those matters, but there are areas where the administration can certainly make changes,” said U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, suggesting indirectly that U.S. import duties on India could be lowered.
Speaking after a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, Rubio stated, “India is important to us. Our relationship with India is significant.” He added that both nations agreed to continue cooperation through the Quad; a grouping of the U.S., India, Japan, and Australia; aimed at promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific region and strengthening bilateral partnership to counter China’s influence.
At the same time, Rubio urged European countries to immediately stop purchasing oil and natural gas from Russia and called for strict sanctions on nations that continue such purchases. Alongside these remarks, Rubio again hinted that the U.S. might consider lowering import tariffs on India.
Editorial PerspectiveWashington’s duplicity is evident; on one hand, it imposes sanctions to hurt India’s economy, and on the other, it pretends to value India as a key partner. India clearly recognizes this anti-India face of the United States and should remain watchful. |
