Concerns Raised at the United Nations Human Rights Council

Geneva (Switzerland) – At the 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Narendra Kumar of the Shivi Development Society expressed serious concern over the rising violence against minorities in Bangladesh. He stated that religious freedom in Bangladesh is increasingly under threat. Narendra Kumar highlighted that after Sheikh Hasina was removed from power in August 2024, hundreds of Hindu homes, businesses, and temples across the country were destroyed. During this period of political instability, the Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council recorded over 2,000 incidents of religious violence between August 4 and 20, including attacks on 69 temples.
The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has acknowledged this violence; however, Narendra Kumar criticized it, stating that Yunus linked these riots solely to political reasons and downplayed the severity of religious intolerance in the country. Narendra Kumar urged the Human Rights Council to pressure Bangladesh to ensure the protection of minorities.
Editorial PerspectiveWhile atrocities are being committed against minorities in Bangladesh, the UN Human Rights Commission must not only express concern but also take concrete steps to ensure the safety and protection of Hindus there. |
