Supreme Court slams DMK Government in Tamil Nadu for erecting statue of former CM Karunanidhi
(DMK stands for Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam)

New Delhi – The DMK Government in Tamil Nadu had sought permission to install a bronze statue and a nameplate of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi near the public entrance of the Valliyur vegetable market in Tirunelveli District. While hearing this, the Supreme Court reprimanded the Government and asked why it is spending public funds to glorify its former leaders. The Court denied permission to erect the statue.
1. Notably, the Madras High Court had banned the State Government from erecting statues in public places. Against this, the Government had filed a petition in the Supreme Court.
2. The Supreme Court asked the Government to withdraw the petition, and also clarified that in a democratic system, respect for leaders should be in the minds of the people, not in statues erected with public funds. Seeing the strict stance of the Court, the State Government also finally withdrew the petition.
