7 Idols of Goddess Durga Vandalized in Bangladesh Ahead of Navratri

Habibur Rahman Arrested

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Ahead of Navratri, seven idols of Goddess Durga were vandalized at the Tarai Para temple in Sarishabari sub-district of Jamalpur district.

Based on the complaint filed by the temple committee, police arrested the accused, Habibur Rahman.

Temple committee president Amresh Ghosh said that at the time of the incident there was a power outage and light rain. Taking advantage of this, Habibur entered the temple and vandalized the idols. “We have been celebrating Durga Puja here for the past three years. This incident has left us frightened,” he added.

Idol vandalism incidents in Bangladesh last year

1. Gaibandha (July 2024): Idols in several pandals were vandalized and set on fire. No arrests have been made in this case to date.

2. Faridpur and Madaripur (August 2024): Idols at Shri Kali and Shri Durga temples in Faridpur were vandalized, while temples of Shri Ganesh and Shri Radha-Krishna in Madaripur were attacked. Police and military conducted inquiries, but no action was taken.

3. Dinajpur, Kushtia, and Netrakona (September 2024): Idols were vandalized in these three districts.

4. Gazipur (17 September 2024): An idol was damaged at the Kashipur temple. Police claimed it had fallen due to strong winds, which Hindu organizations strongly criticized.

Editorial Perspective

The plight of Hindu deities’ idols in an Islamic country! If something like this had happened in India concerning the places of worship of other religions, countries across the world would have branded Hindus and India as “Taliban.” Yet, while such incidents keep happening repeatedly in Bangladesh, not only the Hindus in India but the entire world remains silent !
