Karnataka Government begins social, economic, and educational survey from today

  • Hindus who have converted to Christianity will be listed with the prefix ‘Christian’ before their caste

  • 1.75 lakh teachers deployed for the survey

  • Estimated expenditure: ₹420 crore

  • Converts among Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities to be listed as ‘Christian Lingayat’ or ‘Christian Vokkaliga’

Bengaluru (Karnataka) – The Congress government in Karnataka has decided to conduct a social, economic, and educational survey from September 22 to October 7. For this, 1.75 lakh teachers have been appointed. The survey is expected to cost about ₹420 crore. Against this backdrop, the Congress government is being accused of attempting to divide Hindu society.

A major controversy has arisen regarding the inclusion of the caste column in the survey. Reports suggest that the Congress government has made provisions to record Hindus who converted to Christianity with both their original Hindu caste and the prefix ‘Christian’. For example, if a Lingayat or Vokkaliga Hindu converts to Christianity, they will be recorded as ‘Christian Lingayat’ or ‘Christian Vokkaliga’.

“The list itself is confusing” – Congress Ministers

Several cabinet ministers have raised objections to the caste column prepared by the Backwards Classes Commission. They argue that the list is confusing and that it will take time to explain to people where exactly to provide the correct information.

“In the religion column, Hindus must write only ‘Hindu’” – BJP

B.Y. Vijayendra, Karnataka BJP President, launched a sharp attack on the Congress government. He said, “The government has created 47 new caste categories. This will only create more confusion and weaken social unity.” He appealed to Hindus that while filling the religion column, they should write only “Hindu” and nothing else.

Decision could create unrest in society – Governor

Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot has also expressed concern over this provision. In a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on September 16, he said that it is wrong to prefix the word ‘Christian’ with Hindu caste names, as caste divisions do not exist in Christianity. He warned that this decision of the government could create social unrest and urged the government to reconsider.

Survey essential to study social, economic, and educational conditions – CM Siddaramaiah

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah defended the survey. He said it is crucial for understanding the social, economic, and educational conditions of the people. He accused the BJP of exploiting the issue for political purposes.
