Islamabad (Pakistan) – Tensions continue in Pakistan after humiliating defeat by India in the Asia Cup and Indian players denying shaking hands with the Pakistani players post-match. In a TV panel discussion, Pakistan’s former cricketer Shahid Afridi said, ‘India is trying to become Israel’. He also accused the Modi Government of practicing politics that divides people on Hindu-Muslim lines. He claimed, ‘As long as the BJP is in power, this style of politics will continue’. He added that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s outlook is positive and that Gandhi seeks to improve relations with all countries, especially Pakistan, through dialogue.

• Reacting to Afridi’s remarks, BJP leader Amit Malviya said that Afridi, who never misses an opportunity to spew venom against India and dreams of Kashmir becoming part of Pakistan, has suddenly begun praising Rahul Gandhi. Why is it that every person who opposes India sees Rahul Gandhi as a friend ? When India’s enemies start cheering you, the people of India understand where your loyalties lie.

During the TV discussion on a Pakistani national channel, a former Pakistani cricketer who was originally Christian and later converted to Islam, referred to India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav as ‘Suar-kumar’. Even after the anchor pointed out the inappropriateness, he repeated the slur.
