Muslims lay siege to police station over alleged insult to Prophet

  • Shahjahanpur (Uttar Pradesh) incident

  • Despite arresting the Hindu accused, mob tried to storm police station to kill him

  • In retaliation, Muslims circulated obscene posts targeting Hindu deities

Shahjahanpur (Uttar Pradesh) – A Hindu man allegedly posted offensive remarks on social media about Prophet Mohammad and the Quran. Angered, local Muslims retaliated by posting derogatory, obscene comments against Hindu deities. Following this, a large mob laid siege to the local police station, shouting “Allahu Akbar” slogans and demanding immediate arrest of the Hindu accused. Police quickly arrested him, but the mob refused to disperse and even attempted to break into the police station to attack him. Eventually, Police had to resort to mild baton charges.

Key details

1. On the evening of 12 September, a major disturbance broke out in Shahjahanpur over an alleged objectionable post. A Muslim mob accused a Hindu named K. K. Dixit of making vulgar comments against Prophet Muhammad and the Quran. Outside the police station, they chanted “Arrest the accused, hand him over!” slogans.

2. Even after Dixit was arrested, the mob grew more violent and tried to storm the police station to kill him.

3. To restore order, Police first tried to reason with the crowd and even summoned local Maulanas (Islamic scholars) to calm them down. But when that failed, Police had to use batons. The situation was brought under control only after three hours.

4. Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi stated that swift action by Police brought the situation under control. Additional reinforcements from seven police stations along with the Rapid Action Force carried out flag marches in the area to ensure calm.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Whenever their places of faith are allegedly insulted, Muslims take the law into their own hands. In contrast, Hindus face daily insults to their deities and yet rarely even register verbal protest.
  • Please note the double standard : Police showed extreme promptness in arresting the Hindu accused, but did not act with the same urgency against Muslims who circulated vulgar posts about Hindus’ deities.
