Public interest petition against India–Pakistan Asia Cup match heard in Supreme Court

New Delhi – A petition seeking a ban on the India–Pakistan cricket match in the Asia Cup 2025 was filed in the Supreme Court. The Court refused to admit the petition, declaring that the match must be held and no further hearing would take place. Under the current Asia Cup schedule, India and Pakistan are set to face each other on 14 September.

Argument in the petition
The public interest plea argued that after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025, playing cricket with Pakistan is against national interest. Such a match, it stated, would insult the sacrifice of soldiers and innocent civilians. At this crucial moment in India–Pakistan relations, displaying “sportsmanship” in this manner would be a grave mistake.
Editorial PerspectivePatriotic citizens expect that before decisions like allowing an India–Pakistan match, the Union Government should first conduct an official survey to gauge public opinion. |
