‘Block Everything’ movement brings traffic to a standstill

200 people arrested

Paris (France) – After Nepal, nationwide protests have now started in the European country of France. While instability was already visible in the French parliament, violent clashes broke out between the Police and protesters in the capital city of Paris and several other major cities on the morning of September 10th. The campaign, called ‘Block Everything’, has disrupted transport systems across the country. More than 200 people have been arrested in Paris alone. More than 80,000 Police and security forces have been deployed to control the protests. The violent protests come at a time when President Emmanuel Macron appointed Sebastien Le Cornouaille as the country’s new Prime Minister.

Details of the protest

1. Masked protesters blocked roads by placing garbage cans and barricades at various locations.

2. Crowding in the squares of cities like Bordeaux and Marseille.

3. Police were attacked with bottles. A train station in Paris was also attacked.

4. The protesters not only blocked rail and road traffic but also targeted petrol pumps and shops. There are also speculations that they may be looted.

5. Officials suspect that the protest could turn violent the next day as well.

Possible reason behind the movement

Former Prime Minister François Bayrou had presented a plan to reduce the country’s debt by an estimated 35 billion euros (approximately ₹3.7 lakh crore). This drastic decision was strongly opposed by the public and led to the collapse of his Government.
