“India Responsible for Floods in Pakistan” : Ahsan Iqbal

Pakistani ministers make baseless allegations against India

Minister Ahsan Iqbal

Islamabad – Pakistan’s Planning and Development Minister, Ahsan Iqbal, has held India responsible for the floods in Pakistan. He alleged, “India used water as a weapon against Pakistan. It deliberately and suddenly released water from its dams.” He was speaking about the devastating floods in Punjab, Pakistan.

Due to the rising water levels in the Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers, large parts of Punjab have been submerged.

Meanwhile, Pakistani expert Rauf Klasra criticized the Shahbaz Sharif government, holding it accountable for the disastrous consequences of the floods.

Minister Ahsan Iqbal accused India of “water aggression,” claiming that India stores water in rivers and suddenly releases it. Iqbal alleged that India did not give prior warning about the floods; however, this claim is false, as India had indeed informed Pakistan.

On April 22, following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam (Jammu & Kashmir), India suspended the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan. Under this treaty, India was obligated to inform Pakistan if water levels in rivers originating from Kashmir rose.

Editorial Perspective

Blaming India for every crisis has long been Pakistan’s old habit, raising doubts about the credibility of such claims.
