Over 1,000 locations in Gadchiroli and Gondia still under Naxal influence

Mumbai, 16 August (News) – As per the revised list of Naxal-affected areas issued by the State Home Department on 27 June, the entire district of Gadchiroli and 4 talukas of Gondia remain affected. According to a Home Department report submitted to the Election Commission during the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, as many as 1,083 areas across these two districts are still under Naxal influence. Not all of these are highly sensitive, and some may be reclassified as less affected, but eliminating Naxalism from these regions remains a key challenge for the Police.

According to the Home Department report:

1.  In Gadchiroli, 972 areas across the Armori, Gadchiroli, and Aheri constituencies, and in Gondia, 111 areas in Arjuni-Morgaon and Amgaon constituencies, are affected by Naxal activities.

2.  In the revised list, parts of Gadchiroli such as Katezhari, Yelchil, Patagudam, Aladandi, Surjagad, Pipliburki, and in Gondia, Pipariya, Murkutdoha, and Piparkhari, have been declared highly sensitive. Armed outposts have been stationed in all these areas.

3.  Bomb detection and disposal squads have also been deployed in highly sensitive zones.

4.  Between 2020 and September 2024, 3 Policemen were killed and 44 injured in Naxal attacks in Maharashtra. Naxals carried out arson at 16 places. During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, they carried out 22 attacks, while in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, 7 attacks took place.
