Indian Army posts clippings on ‘X’ of US military aid to Pakistan 54 years ago

New Delhi – The US has imposed a 25% import tariff on India, accusing it of funding Russia’s war effort through oil purchases, while at the same time signing oil deals with Pakistan. Amid ongoing talks between India and the US on this matter, the Indian Army has now exposed Washington’s historic anti-India moves. It posted newspaper clippings on social media showing how, 54 years ago, the US provided military aid to Pakistan against India.

1. The Army’s Eastern Command posted these 54-year-old reports on ‘X.’ Between 1954 and 1971, the US supplied Pakistan with weapons worth over 2 billion dollars (₹1 lakh crore at today’s value). The clippings, dated 5 August 1971, also carried a report titled “Pakistan preparing for war.” The US had been supplying arms to Pakistan for decades, enabling it to prepare for war against India. The 1965 and 1971 wars were direct outcomes of seeds sown by US support to Pakistan decades earlier.

2. The same newspaper page also carried a statement from then Minister of State for Defence Vidya Charan Shukla. Addressing the Rajya Sabha, Shukla said, “In view of the rebellion in Bangladesh, NATO countries and the Soviet Union were requested to stop supplying weapons to Pakistan.”

Editorial Perspective

Despite receiving US military aid, Pakistan was crushed by India in war. The advanced F-16 fighter jets given to Pakistan were also shot down during the Balakot airstrike. The US must never forget this.
