America procures uranium from Russia for its nuclear industry

India rebukes the US after the latter issues fresh tariff threat to India over oil imports from Russia

US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

New Delhi – India has rebuked the US for the first time in direct terms ever since the latter began threatening India with tariffs. The official statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs said, ‘The United States continues to import uranium hexafluoride from Russia for its nuclear industry, palladium for its electric vehicle (EV) industry, as well as fertilizers and chemicals. The same applies to the European Union. In such a scenario, targeting India is both unjustified and unreasonable’. This response came after US President Donald Trump threatened India yet again on the night of 4thAugust with increased import duties over its oil purchases from Russia.

Data that exposes the US

1. China is the largest buyer of Russian crude oil. Between December 2022 and June 2025, 47% of Russia’s total crude oil exports went to China. In the same period, India imported 38%, while the European Union and Turkey imported 6% each.

2. In 2024 alone, the US imported goods worth $3 billion (₹24,900 crore) from Russia. In just the first five months of this year, the US has already imported $2.09 billion (₹17,347 crore) worth of goods from Russia. This figure is expected to reach $4 billion (₹33,200 crore) by year-end.

3. In 2024, the European Union carried out bilateral trade worth approximately $72.9 billion (₹15,99,240 crore) with Russia. In 2023, trade in services alone was worth $18.6 billion (₹1,54,380 crore). This was greater than India’s total trade with Russia in that year or after.

4. In 2024, the European Union imported 16.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia. The EU also trades with Russia in fertilizers, mineral products, chemicals, iron, and machinery.
