Hemant Karkare, Chief of ATS Mumbai tortured me the most after arrest : (Retd) Major Ramesh Upadhyay

Mumbai – I was in Mumbai on the day the bomb blast took place in Malegaon; but when I was arrested in this case, I was beaten up and abused. Our family has had to endure a lot of suffering in the last 17 years. We were threatened with rape of my daughter. (The then Chief of the Anti-Terrorism Squad) Hemant Karkare, a Police officer, beat me with a belt. He took off my clothes and danced on my chest and beat me. Police officer Hemant Karkare tortured me the most; but the earth is round. Karkare was killed in the attack of terrorists, this terrible situation was told by Major Ramesh Upadhyay (Retired), who was acquitted in the Malegaon bomb blast case, to a news channel.

1. He said, I have never been to Malegaon in my life; but after beating me, I was forced to mention the names of H.H. Sarsanghchalak Dr. Mohanji Bhagwat, Praveen Togadia, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Yogi Adityanath; but I did not mention their names till the end. For us, all these were big people. Hemant Karkare used to tell me all the time, ‘If you do not mention their names, we will make you an accused’.

2. Sushilkumar Shinde and Digvijay Singh deliberately got us all arrested.

3. I was tested for Narco three times. The court knew from the first day that I was innocent; but still we were ruined both socially and economically. I am an Army officer. Why would I bomb ?

4. Threats were also made like, ‘My son will be declared a terrorist’.

5. One day our house was broken into and all the belongings were thrown out. That time too, no one helped us.

  • Hemant Karkare, the then head of the Anti-Terrorism Squad, is no longer alive today; but this shows how he investigated the Malegaon bomb blast. If senior officers in the investigation system committed such heinous acts to label Hindus as ‘terrorists’, then it is outrageous !
  • The alleged accused in the Malegaon bomb blast were acquitted; but the Police officers who tortured them are still at large. They must be punished.
