Raipur (Chhattisgarh) – Millions of families are destroyed as online gambling is rapidly increasing in this country. Enacting a law by one State is not enough but stringent and effective law is essential for the country. ‘Surajya Abhiyan’, a drive under the auspices of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) for good governance, held a meeting with Chhattisgarh Chief Minister (CM) Vishnu Deo Sai and demanded to present a proposal to the Union Government under Article 252 of the Constitution. CM has responded positively and has promised the delegation to forward the proposal to the Union Government. The delegation comprised of Mr Sunil Ghanwat, the Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra State Coordinator of HJS; Mr Ranajit Savarkar, the president of ‘Swatantryaveer Savarkar Rashtriya Smarak’ and a grandson of Swa. Savarkar, activists viz. Mr Govind Sahu, Mr Rohit Tiranga, , Mr Hemant Kanaskar, Mr Prasad Vadake, Mr Paravesh Tiwari; Mr Ankit Dwivedi, Mr Ajaysingh Thakur and Mr Ashish Parida were present  on the occasion. CM has taken a serious note of the issue and responded positively by promising to forward the proposal to the Union Government.

Harm caused due to online gambling in Chhattisgarh State

A few incidents of harm caused due to online gambling in Chhattisgarh were brought to the notice of CM.

1. In 2025, a 21-year-old young man Vaibhav Sahu committed suicide as he was stressed after losing  ₹35,000 in online gambling.

2. In July 2025, Khairagarh Police exposed the evil acts of a gang involved in online gambling business worth ₹20 crore.

3. Till today, 444 cases have been registered in the State in this context and more than 1000 people have been arrested while  ₹2.20 crores have been seized. Besides, 77 cases related to online gambling on ‘Mahadev App’ have been registered in the State.

4. During the IPL cricket season, gambling of ₹8-10 lakhs daily was unearthed and many digital wallets have been frozen. This was pertaining to only one State. Similar cases are taking place in many States.

Gambling Apps have overdues of ₹25,000 crores

Many film stars are shown in the advertisements of online gambling, influencing the youth. In 2025, there have been more than 50 crore users playing online gambling. As per the statistics of 2024, it is a field with more than ₹30,000 crores turnover. There are many foreign companies operating online gambling business and it has been alleged that all the money is sent abroad’ Also, the chances of winning in apps like ‘Dream Eleven’ are so negligible like 0.00001% i.e. as bad as nil; therefore, many young people are cheated through these Apps. The Government has served a notice to online gambling companies for evading GST and asking them to pay ₹55,000 crores by way of taxes wherein the amount of overdue from only one company viz. “Dream Eleven’ is ₹25,000 crores.

The only effective solution is nationwide stringent law

Laws have been passed against online gambling by only a few States such as Assam, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu; but the laws passed by these States are not adequate and the law passed in Tamil Nadu has been challenged in the Supreme Court. Overall, the State-wise laws are not enough and a nationwide stringent law is required to be passed, as stated by ‘Surajya Abhiyan’. The Union Government will be able to pass such a law if two States send their proposal under Article 252 of Indian Constitution; therefore, ‘Surajya Abhiyan’ is working for States to urgently send such proposals to the Union Government.
