A cow is a cow : Supreme Court

Issue of the petition demanding use of only indigenous cow milk for puja and preparing ‘prasad’ for Tirupati Balaji

Supreme Court and Tirupati Balaji Temple

New Delhi – A cow is a cow. The Supreme Court observed that there are much more important issues to address and stated that true love for God lies in serving fellow living beings but not in such matters. The Bench of the Supreme Court stated that the observation was made with total respect. A writ petition was filed demanding use of only indigenous cow’s milk for puja and making ‘prasad’ of Bhagavan Venkateswara. The above observation was made on this petition by the bench of Justice M M Sundresh and Justice N Koteswar Singh granting permission to the petitioner to withdraw this petition.

 Pleading by the Petitioner

As per the ritualistic worship under Hindu scriptures, using cow milk is an essential tradition. We should insist on following the rituals as per the science. There is a proposal and an order with ‘the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam’ in this connection which the petitioner is demanding for implementation.

Observations by the Supreme Court

Justice Sundaresh stated that such classification is made by humans. It is based on language, caste, community or State. It has not been decided by God. God is the same for everyone. He is kind and just for other animals too. You cannot say that God wants only indigenous cow’s milk. We are not inclined to entertain this petition.
