Delhi High Court stays release of film ‘Udaipur Files’

New Delhi – The Delhi High Court on 10 July issued a stay on the release of the film Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder, based on the brutal killing of Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur. The film was scheduled to be released on 11 July. The court ordered that the film must not be released until an interim decision is reached on the related petition.

The petition was filed by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Arshad Madani and other petitioners. Earlier, the Supreme Court had declined to impose a stay on the film’s release.

Challenge to be filed in Supreme Court

Filmmaker Amit Jani has stated that he will challenge the Delhi High Court’s decision in the Supreme Court. He said, “We even screened the film for their advocate Kapil Sibal. Despite watching the film, they have continued to oppose it. Today the court has said the film is banned. We are taking this order to the Supreme Court.”

He further added, “They have been advised to approach the Central Government, which has been given seven days to decide whether the film is appropriate or not.”

It is noteworthy that although Kanhaiya Lal was murdered three years ago, no final judgement has yet been delivered by the court in that case.
