Pregnant Hindu woman Rutuja Patil dies by suicide in Sangli due to religious conversion pressure

  • Maharashtra DGP submits report on religious conversions to Home Minister.

  • Action to be taken against those availing reservation benefits post conversion.

Mumbai, July 12th – Maharashtra’s Director General of Police has recently submitted a report to the Home Department regarding religious conversions taking place across the state. This information was shared by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the State Assembly. He emphasized that forced or inducement-based conversions are a criminal offense, and there must be a stringent and well- defined law to address it. The government will thoroughly verify the report submitted by the DGP and take appropriate action accordingly.

1. In Kupwad, Sangli district, a pregnant Hindu woman named Rutuja Patil died by suicide after being pressured by her husband to convert to Christianity.

2. BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar had submitted a call-attention notice in the Assembly demanding action in this case.

3. Responding to the notice, Chief Minister Fadnavis informed the House of the developments. Padalkar pointed out that a formal FIR was not immediately registered in the matter, to which Fadnavis assured a proper inquiry.

4. Padalkar demanded that action be taken against the pastor involved in the case. Fadnavis stated that the concerned pastor had secured anticipatory bail, but an appeal would be filed and the delay in FIR registration would be investigated by examining the role of the police officers involved.

5. In the Pune district religious conversion case, a Special Investigation Committee’s report will be obtained within a month, and necessary action will follow. Padalkar also demanded that those who have converted be disqualified from availing caste-based reservation.

6. On this, Fadnavis clarified that as per a Supreme Court ruling, reservation benefits cannot be availed on the basis of caste after religious conversion.

7. He further added that, “Those who violate the Supreme Court verdict by converting and still availing reservation will face legal action.”
