Claims of improved mental health, reduced irritability and increased concentration

New York – A yoga studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, organised a yoga workshop to awaken the navel chakra (Manipura chakra) and the root chakra. In addition to adults, many youth and children participated in this yoga workshop. The effort was aimed at creating mental peace in children, maintaining emotional balance, and increasing self-control. It was claimed that this yoga activity improves mental health, reduces irritability, and increases concentration.

2. Marina Glekel of Michigan sought the help of meditation instructor Veronica for her son Tony. Tony suffers from diabetes. Meditation helped him understand his body and reduce stress. Yoga helped him stabilise his blood sugar levels. Marina now conducts online sessions for both of her children.
3. Diabetologist Dr. Meredith Wilkes says, “Stress, anxiety, and depression can affect the body’s sugar control. Yoga and meditation can help children relieve this stress.”
4. Sebastian Allappat has started a program called ‘The Spark’ about art, yoga and meditation. Sebastian says that yoga and deep breathing teach children flexibility and self-control.
5. Psychologists and teachers are now advising parents to teach their children yoga and meditation so that they can control anger and stress.
6. Child psychologist Kim Tingley says, ‘Today’s generation is growing up with mobiles and gadgets. This clearly shows a lack of concentration in them. In such a situation, activities like meditation and yoga are also important.
7. Michelle Kirnojek, a pediatric occupational therapist, teaches classes at various studios. She provides children with tools to help them learn yoga techniques, such as soft toys that teach them to take deep breaths and pinwheels that help them control their breathing. These tools teach children meditation and peace in a playful environment. The results of these interventions are also visible. Many children have become less irritable and have started to talk rationally instead of fighting with their siblings and friends.
