Shocking question by TMC MLA Madan Mitra : “Why did the victim go to the scene in the first place ?”

Gang rape case of a female student at a law college in Kolkata

Kolkata (Bengal) – Tensions are running high in the state after a 19-year-old female student was gang-raped by two current and one former student of the same law college in Kolkata. In response to the incident, Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra sparked outrage by questioning, “If the student had informed someone about where she was going or had taken some friends along with her, this incident might have been avoided. The perpetrators took advantage of the situation.”

Following heavy criticism from the BJP, Mitra issued a clarification, stating that his comments were being misinterpreted and that he did not intend them the way they were perceived.

Prior to Mitra, Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee had made a controversial statement saying, “If a friend is raping his own female friend, what can be done? Should police be stationed in every school? This was done by students to a fellow student. Who will protect the victim? Who commits these crimes and harassment? Some men do. Women should fight against such perverse men.”

The Trinamool Congress later issued a statement saying the party does not endorse the views expressed by either Madan Mitra or Kalyan Banerjee.
