India ranks second globally in food wastage !

An alarming 68.8 crore tonnes of food wasted annually !

New Delhi – While an estimated 23.4 crore Indians suffer from malnutrition, India also ranks among the top nations in food wastage. As per global data, China is first, wasting 91.6 crore tonnes of food every year, while India stands second with 68.8 crore tonnes of annual wastage.

Startling global and national figures:

  1. One-third of the world’s total food production is wasted each year. Just one-fourth of this wasted food could feed an estimated 79.5 crore people.
  2. Each person globally wastes around 79 kilograms of food annually — enough to serve nearly 100 crore plates of food every single day.
  3. The United States wastes about 19.4 crore tonnes of food annually, while France discards 5 crore tonnes and Germany 6 crore tonnes.
  4. Maldives ranks highest in per capita food wastage, with each person wasting around 207 kilograms of food annually.
  5. This contrast is deeply troubling — crores starve while crores of tonnes of food are discarded. It is time for both societal reform and strict deterrents to correct this gross injustice.

Editorial Perspective

Those who waste food should be made to go hungry — that’s the only fitting punishment !
