Respecting customs and traditions, formulate a policy for Ganesh idol immersion : CM Devendra Fadnavis

Mumbai, June 28 – Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the administration to formulate a policy that respects religious customs and traditions while incorporating long-term environmental solutions regarding the immersion of large Plaster of Paris (POP) Lord Ganesha idols. The directive was given during a meeting held at Sahyadri Guest House on June 27th to discuss the celebration of an eco-friendly Ganeshotsav. Present at the meeting were Cultural Affairs Minister Adv. Ashish Shelar, Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, and senior officials from the Environment Department and the Pollution Control Board.

The Bombay High Court had instructed the state government to announce a clear policy on the immersion of POP Ganesha idols. In response, the state government sought a report from the Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission, which was submitted by the Commission’s Chairman, Dr. Anil Kakodkar.

The report emphasized the need to study the possibility of immersing large idols in deep-sea waters. Chief Minister Fadnavis directed the administration to carry out this study and present the findings in court.

The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of implementing concrete measures to clean the beaches after public idol immersion. Additionally, he urged that eco-friendly materials and natural colours be used in the making and decoration of Ganesh idols.
Dr. Anil Kakodkar stated, “Chemical-based colours lead to greater pollution. Therefore, natural colours should be used.”
