Omit the words ‘Socialist’ and ‘Secular’ from the Constitution : Shivraj Singh Chouhan

Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) – ‘Amendments made to the Constitution during the Emergency need to be reversed. The inclusion of the words ‘Socialist’ and ‘Secular’ in the Preamble during that time must be reconsidered’, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan demanded. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale had earlier said, ‘The words ‘Socialist’ and ‘Secular’ must be removed from the Constitution. Dr Ambedkar did not include these words in the original Preamble of the Constitution’. When asked to comment on Hosabale’s statement, Chouhan responded with the above remark. He further clarified, ‘Secularism is not a part of our cultural roots’.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, responding to Hosabale’s statement, said, ‘The true face of the RSS has once again come to light. They don’t want the Constitution—they want the Manusmriti. Since the Constitution speaks of equality, secularism, and justice, they hate it.
