Bhubaneswar (Odisha) – In a horrifying case that has sparked outrage, 10 individuals — including 4 minors — have been arrested for gangraping a 20-year-old college student at the popular Gopalpur beach. The victim, a degree student at a private college, was with her boyfriend at a secluded spot near the shore on June 15, celebrating ‘Raj Parba’ (a local festival), when the group ambushed them. The assailants reportedly restrained her boyfriend and took turns raping her.
The victim filed a complaint at the Gopalpur police station. According to officials, the accused were attempting to flee the state but were apprehended before they could escape. Ganjam District Superintendent of Police, Shravan Vivek M., stated that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident thoroughly.
Odisha’s Leader of Opposition, Naveen Patnaik, called the gangrape “deeply shocking” and condemned the lack of safety for women. The National Commission for Women also took cognizance of the incident, terming it “outrageous” and directed local authorities to intervene swiftly.
