Attacking Iran is Israel’s double standards : Sonia Gandhi

  • Congress leader Sonia Gandhi criticised in an article written for ‘The Hindu’

  • Gandhi also criticised India’s silence on Gaza and now Iran, calling it alarming

New Delhi – ‘Israel itself is a nuclear weapons state, yet it targets Iran even though Iran does not possess nuclear weapons. This is double standards on Israel’s part’, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi said in an article written for the daily The Hindu.

‘Iran has been a long-standing friend to India, and in this situation, India’s silence is disturbing’, she wrote. ‘It is still not too late. India must speak clearly, act responsibly, and use every diplomatic channel available to defuse tensions and promote a return to dialogue in West Asia’, she added.

Israel has undermined peace and nurtured terrorism

In her article, Sonia Gandhi further said,

The current Israeli leadership, under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has a long and unfortunate record of undermining peace and nurturing extremism. (Has Sonia Gandhi ever made such statements about Pakistan in the context of India ? Or written an article on that ? – Editor) His government’s continuing expansion of illegal settlements, its alliances with ultra-nationalist factions, and its obstruction of the two-state solution have not only deepened the suffering of the Palestinian people but also pushed the broader region toward perpetual conflict. (Sonia Gandhi sees the suffering of Palestinian Muslims, but not that of Hindus ? – Editor)

Editorial Perspectives

  • Every country has the full right to defend itself. If Iran’s nuclear bomb posed a threat to Israel’s existence, what was wrong in Israel taking preemptive action ? Should every country follow Gandhi-style nonviolence and commit suicide, as Sonia Gandhi seems to suggest ?
  • When Hindus are attacked in India, or in Pakistan and Bangladesh, why is the silence of Congress leaders not considered ‘alarming’ ? Why does Congress never speak about protecting Hindus ? Has Congress ever shed tears for the displaced Kashmiri Hindus ?
