Attempt to destroy agricultural produce using fungus

Washington (U.S) – Two Chinese nationals have been arrested in the United States on charges of smuggling dangerous biological agents. FBI Director Kash Patel provided this information. The two individuals were smuggling a highly dangerous fungus called Fusarium graminearum into the U.S. This fungus can affect agricultural produce such as wheat, corn, rice, and sorghum, potentially reducing crop yields and causing significant economic damage.
1. Kash Patel stated in a post on ‘X’ that this incident is truly shocking. Jian, who was working at the University of Michigan, was attempting to smuggle Fusarium graminearum. This fungus can cause “head blight” disease, which can significantly reduce the yield of staple crops like wheat, corn, sorghum, and rice. It can also affect the health of both humans and animals, potentially causing billions of dollars in economic damage globally every year.
2. Significantly, Jian had received financial support from the Chinese government to conduct research on this fungus. Jian’s friend, Junyong Liu, who was working at a university in China, was also conducting research on the same fungus and is also facing charges. Liu initially denied the smuggling allegations, but later admitted that he had attempted to smuggle Fusarium graminearum into the United States through the Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
