Police detain Shiv Sainiks protesting for prayer permission at Durgadi fort

Muslims offered prayers at the foot of Durgadi Fort on Bakri Eid

Kalyan (Thane District) – On Bakri Eid (June 7th), Muslims offered prayers at the foot of Durgadi fort. During this time, Hindu devotees were reportedly restricted from accessing the fort. In protest, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) and Thackeray group Shiv Sainiks gathered at Lalchowki, Kalyan (West), ringing bells and demanding that if Muslims were permitted to offer namaz, Hindus should be allowed similar access for religious worship.During the protest, Shiv Sainiks performed aarti (a Hindu ritual), which led to their detention by the police for violating prohibitory orders.

Shiv Sainiks raised slogans demanding the “liberation” of Durgadi Fort. Police set up barricades at Lalchowki, blocking access to the fort.
Protesters from both Shiv Sena factions attempted to bypass the barricades and reach the fort but were stopped by police. Authorities urged protesters to remain calm and contained the protest at Lalchowki.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Questions have been raised about the Maharashtra Police’s differing approach; permitting Muslim to offer namaz while prohibiting Hindus from doing puja. Is the Police from Pakistan or India ?
  • Despite Maharashtra being governed by the pro-Hindu BJP and Karnataka by the Congress, Hindus face restrictions in both states. A united Hindus is the only way forward.
