Bengaluru stampede

Bengaluru (Karnataka) – A complaint has been lodged with Cubbon Park Police Station by a social activist, Snehamayi Krishna, for the stampede that occurred outside Chinnaswamy Stadium in the evening on 04.06.2025, seeking legal action against Chief Minister Siddarmaiah, Dy CM DK Shivakumar and Karnataka Cricket Board for negligence. A case of negligence and culpable homicide has been registered at the Cubbon Park Police Station against the management of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the Karnataka State Cricket Association, and the event management firm responsible for planning the victory celebration.
The winner of Indian Premier League (IPL) ‘Royal Challengers Bengaluru’ team was being felicitated at the stadium. The capacity of the stadium is 32,000 people but more than 3 lakh people gathered outside the stadium and they wanted to enter the stadium which led to stampede. Eleven people have been reported dead and 33 injured so far. Karnataka High Court has taken note of this incident on its own.
Inquiry to be conducted by a Magistrate
Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara informed that CM has ordered inquiry into the mishap under a magistrate. Action will be taken against the guilty found as per the inquiry report. We had not asked ‘Royal Challengers Bengaluru’ or Karnataka Cricket Board to organise the programme but it was organised by them and the team was brought to Bengaluru.
Many major accidents have happened in the country earlier like in Maha Kumbha Mela – CM Siddaramaiah![]() After the incident occurred in the evening on 04.06.2025, CM Siddaramaiah held a press conference and claimed that more people gathered for the programme than expected by them. The State Government has declared Rs 10 lakhs compensation for respective families of the victims. The injured will get free treatment. All injured people are out of danger. I am not trying to protect but many major accidents have occurred in this country earlier as in Maha Kumbha Mela when 50-60 people lost lives. That doesn’t mean we are trying to shirk from our responsibility. BJP is playing politics but I don’t want to do it. There is a small entrance in the stadium where a large number of people gathered. They broke that entrance causing a stampede. It was the responsibility of the Karnataka Government to provide protection and other things were to be handled by the cricket board. Editorial PerspectiveThe State Government, Police and Karnataka Cricket Board are responsible for the mishap and the concerned people should be imprisoned by filing cases against them. The State Government is unlikely to take any action; therefore, the Central Government or the Court should take note of the matter and take action. |
The mishap could have been avoided had the Government made proper arrangements – BJP
Karnataka BJP president B Y Vijayendra has criticised the Congress Government for this incident and demanded resignation of the Government. He alleged that the incident could have been avoided had the Government made proper arrangements. About 1.50 lakh people had gathered for the final match at Karnavati; but no such accident took place. Why was the programme arranged in such a hurry at Bengaluru and why was permission granted for it without proper arrangements ? Where was the need to celebrate in front of the State Legislative Assembly House and was the programme organised by the CM or Dy CM ? They will have to answer these questions.
Even though there were #stampedes at 4:30 PM today, the celebration was still held inside #chinnaswamystadium at 6 PM.
There was absolutely no sense of responsibility. pic.twitter.com/HPoRoHZMQM

Congress leader Pramod Tiwari stated that it is a very sad and painful mishap. I pay homage to the dead and pray for recovery of the injured. Karnataka Government will give compensation to the aggrieved; but this programme comes under the Karnataka Cricket Board. A foreign establishment has a big share in the ‘Royal Challengers Bengaluru’ that has earned more than Rs 400 crores. It will be appropriate if they pay Rs 22 crores to the families of 11 dead persons and Rs 25-50 lakh to the injured. Those who have become handicapped, should be paid more compensation. Inquiry should be conducted into this incident to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future.
Editorial PerspectivePlease note that Police would not dare to file a case based on such a complaint. Will the people of Karnataka raise their voices against the Government ? |
