Demand to the Railway Minister and Department of Tourism

  • Surajya Abhiyan Demands Action Against Banned Establishment ‘Arenko Catering’

  • Despite the ban, the establishment continues to provide catering services.

Mumbai – M/s Arenko Catering has been banned by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) from March 26, 2024, to March 25, 2027. Despite this, the establishment continues to operate and provide catering services on railway premises, violating IRCTC regulations and consumer rights policies.

This issue has come to light through credible reports and complaints from passengers. In response, Mr. Abhishek Murukute, the Maharashtra Coordinator of Surajya Abhiyan, has demanded immediate action from Railway Minister Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw and Mr. Sanjay Kumar Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of IRCTC.

Key Concerns Raised by Surajya Abhiyan:

1) Ongoing Operations Despite the Ban:
M/s Arenko Catering is reportedly still providing services on trains. It is essential to clarify whether the establishment is currently operating directly or indirectly under IRCTC or any zonal railway jurisdiction.

2) Outstanding Fines and Continued Contracts:
According to a CAG report, IRCTC imposed a fine of ₹62 lakhs on Arenko Catering, of which ₹54 lakhs remain unpaid. Despite this default, Southern Railway has awarded 11 contracts and IRCTC has awarded 7 contracts to the same establishment—raising serious concerns about accountability.

3) Legal Action Demanded:
Surajya Abhiyan has demanded that both the defaulting establishment and any officials involved be subjected to immediate action under the provisions of the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA).

Why is such a demand necessary? Why has the administration failed to take notice?
