Chief of Bangladesh Interim Govt Muhammad Yunus Likely to Resign

The army puts pressure on holding elections before December

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – The main advisor of the Bangladesh Interim Government, Dr Muhammad Yunus, is considering resigning. The students’ controlled National Citizens’ Party Chief, Nahid Islam, shared this information. Nahid Islam said while talking to the ‘BBC Bangla’ news channel that there was news about the resignation of Muhammad Yunus since morning; therefore, he went to discuss the matter with him when Yunus said that he was thinking about it. Yunus also stated that he would not be able to work till there was no accord among all political parties.

Strain between Govt and the Army

In the last two days, the stress between the interim Government and the army has come forth. Army Chief General Waqar-Uz- Zaman clarified while speaking to his officers at the army’s main office that the general elections should not be postponed beyond December this year. The interim Government led by Yunus has no moral or constitutional right to take any decision on the sensitive national issues. The army has claimed that the construction of the Rakhine Highway (A proposed highway on the Myanmar border) without the army’s permission was illegal.

Khaleda Zia demands holding elections in December

The former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Khaleda Zia once again demanded elections in December. Zia’s party has warned that it would be difficult to work with the interim Government if it didn’t start the process of preparing for holding elections and didn’t declare it immediately.
