Flood situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir due to sudden rise in Jhelum river’s water level

Pakistan alleges India deliberately released water

Islamabad (Pakistan) – At a time when it is being said that after India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, Pakistan would be forced to beg India for water, a sudden rise in the water level of the Jhelum river has caused flooding in many parts of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Following this, alerts have been issued, and local residents have been asked to move to safer locations. Pakistan is accusing India of having deliberately released water. Due to the flood situation, local administration has declared a water emergency in the Hattian Bala region, and warnings are being announced through mosques.

1.Mudassar Farooq, Deputy Commissioner of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, alleged that the release of excess water into the Jhelum was a deliberate act by India. He said that India has released more water into the river than usual, causing flooding. While he mentioned there is no immediate cause for panic, people have been advised to stay away from riverbanks and not to bring animals near the river.

2.According to Pakistani media reports, under the Indus Waters Treaty, India would earlier inform Pakistan before releasing or stopping the flow of water in the Jhelum, Chenab, and Indus rivers. However, this time, India has not provided any prior information.

3.India has not yet made any statement regarding Pakistan’s allegations.

Editorial Perspective

If India has indeed released water, it is a much-needed lesson for Pakistan and Indians would want India to continue taking such actions.
