Anti-Hinduphobia motion presented in the Scottish parliament

Edinburgh (Scotland) – For the first time, a motion condemning Hinduphobia has been officially presented in the Scottish Parliament. The motion, introduced by Ash Regan, a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) from the Alba Party, aims to address the growing instances of discrimination, hatred, and neglect faced by the Hindu community in Scotland. The motion clearly states that Hindus in Scotland are subjected to discrimination, social exclusion, and hate.

Key Points:

1. The motion received support from several Members of Parliament, including Colin Beattie, Stephanie Callaghan, and Kevin Stewart, among others.

2. While presenting the motion, Ash Regan emphasized that this is “not just a symbolic gesture, but a call for tangible change.”

3. The proposal is based on a report titled “Hinduphobia in Scotland: Understanding, Addressing and Overcoming Prejudice” by the Gandhian Peace Society. The report was authored by General Secretary Dhruv Kumar, President Anuranjan Jha, Sukhi Bains, Ajit Trivedi, and Neil Jhalla, President of the Indian Council of Scotland and UK.

30,000 Hindus in Scotland – Facing discrimination in silence

The report highlights numerous distressing incidents shared by members of the Hindu community in Scotland, including:

  •  Attacks on temples
  •  Workplace discrimination against Hindu employees
  •  Mockery of Hindu festivals and traditions
  •  Cultural neglect in schools and public life
  •  In some cases, physical or psychological harassment
  • These incidents were reported by members of Scotland’s Hindu population, which numbers around 30,000.

Editorial Perspective

While parliaments abroad are raising their voice against Hinduphobia, in India—even as attacks on Hindus continue—not many Hindu elected representatives or political leaders come forward to support Hindus. This is shameful for the Hindus who voted them into power !
