Tamil Nadu Govt Melts 1000 kg Gold offered in 21 Temples and Deposits it in Banks

Gold is fetching interest

Chennai –  The DMK Government in Tamil Nadu has informed that more than 1,000 kg gold offered by devotees in 21 temples has been melted and converted into 24 carat bricks and deposited in banks. The Government is earning about Rs 17.81 crore by way of interest on this investment.

All the gold was melted in the Government mint in Mumbai as reported by the State Government and later, it was deposited in State Bank of India under the ‘Gold Investment Scheme’. Three committees have been set up under retired judges in 3 regions of the State, to monitor the said scheme and keep a watch on the process of melting of gold and its investment.

Similar plan to be implemented for even silver

After gold, the State Government is now planning to melt silver items, which are not used by the temples, into pure silver bricks. The Government is taking help from private companies which are in the business of melting silver.

Govt claims to take such action for the protection and development of temples’ properties

Hindu Religious and Charity Donations Department has mentioned in a policy memorandum submitted in the State Legislative Assembly that the Government’s plan not only provides financial benefits to temples but it is also ensuring the right use of donations given by devotees. It is considered to be a meaningful step taken for the protection of temples’ properties and their development.

Editorial Perspective

The ruling DMK Government’s deputy Chief Minister and other leaders in Tamil Nadu compare Sanatan Dharma to Dengue and malaria. Do such people have a right to even touch the gold offered by Hindus in temples ? Hindus in Tamil Nadu need to question the DMK Government.
