Villagers allege missionaries used incentives to promote conversion
According to villagers, construction of the building had been ongoing for the past two years. A local resident, Ramnath Manjhi, lodged a formal complaint on 3rdApril, 2025. He detailed the following points,
1. A person named Jyoti Prakash from Jehanabad had bought land claiming it was for a school. Believing this, the villagers supported the construction. However, they were shocked to later see a church signboard at the site. Soon after, missionaries began encouraging locals to convert to Christianity, triggering public outrage and strong opposition to the church.
2. Missionaries gradually began gathering in theunderconstruction building and started conducting Sunday prayers. Attendees were reportedly given Rs 1,000 each in envelopes. Villagers claim that both cash and food supplies were used to lure and manipulate them.
3. The missionaries allegedly promised to cover expenses for villagers’ daughters’ weddings and their children’s education if they converted. They also began discouraging people from celebrating Hindu festivals like Chhath Puja.
4. Missionaries gave villagers special water bottles and instructed them to drink from them for 20 days. They also advised them to say “Hallelujah” (praise the Lord). They said, “Stop worshipping your Gods. Believe in Jesus, and your suffering will end.”
Previous incidents of opposition to churches in Saran
Previously, another case of conversion had come to light in Saran. In 2022, a church was being built in Jatua village, which was opposed by Dalits. A local resident had claimed that he was offered Rs 1 lakh to convert. Due to villagers’ resistance, the missionaries fled; they were later identified as being from Andhra Pradesh.
